A courtesy check is a visit by a volunteer, trained in boating safety, to make sure you´re ready to navigate safely and to cope with an accident.
Once you accept this visit, a volunteer will board your boat. With you, he will check the presence and condition of safety equipment that is required to deal with an accident and your boat´s compliance with other regulatory agencies, identify problems and discuss solutions: he will address general boating safety issues and answer your questions.
No fines are attached to this program. As the name suggests, this is a training and prevention initiative.
You will learn about boating security and you will be ready to safely go on the water. This check is designed to help you carry out your water activities, year after year, in a secure manner.
The courtesy check is carried out by a well-trained prevention advisor to check with you whether you have all the required equipment and whether it complies with Transport Canada requirements. Responsibility to meet the requirements of regulations and safety of the vessel and associated equipment remains the sole responsibility of the owner and operator of the vessel.
These courtesy checks are performed each year, mostly among pleasure craft. A simple way to ensure the safety and of you and your passengers.
