The Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary (Québec) is a non-profit organization that was founded over 30 years ago. It brings together many volunteers that are specialized in maritime search and rescue. Its territory is located along the St. Lawrence River, from the Ontario border to Blanc-Sablon on the North Shore, up to Baie des Chaleurs on the south shore, and also along the Richelieu and Saguenay rivers.
The CCGA-(Q) has nearly 800 members, of the 5000 that make up the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary, that are specially trained for their mission. They are divided into 55 units, located along the navigable waterways of Québec. The fleet includes about 80 boats, of which 30 belong to the organization, with the others being provided by the members themselves.
The rescuers are 100% volunteers. The only material compensation they receive is reimbursement of costs associated with their missions. The Rescue Coordination Centre of the CCG, located in Quebec City, receives all distress calls and dispatches them to the nearest available rescue unit.
CCGA-Québec is part of the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary GCAC - National Inc, with four other areas:
RCMSAR - Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue
GCAC - Central and Arctic Inc.
GCAC - Maritimes Inc.
GCAC - Newfoundland and Labrador Inc.
The mission of the Auxiliary (Q) is to provide a dependable service of maritime search and rescue, by volunteers. To fulfill this mission, the following objectives were set:
Save 100% of lives at risk.
To reduce the number and severity of search and rescue incidents.
To promote safety in the maritime environment.
Support the Canadian Coast Guard.
To provide humanitarian assistance.
To maintain the highest professional standards
Promote dedication and pride of the members towards the organization.
The CCGA(Q) aspires to be the premier volunteer organization in the areas of maritime rescue and boating safety. To do this:
It will be dynamic, innovative, and recognized by its partners, donors, and the general public as a dedicated organization, efficient, well-structured, and present on all the navigable waterways of Quebec.
It will always be able to count on qualified rescue teams, well taught, trained, motivated, and equipped to fulfill its mission, to save lives, and reduce the number and severity of search and rescue incidents.
It will place at the center of its preoccupation, the life, and security of its members.
It will act in a way that its members will experience great pride to be part of the CCGA(Q).
The action of the CCGA (Q) is guided by values to which all members must adhere and must implement at each of their interventions.
To come to aid is the essence of interpersonal relationships which develop the membership, mobilization, and unity among our volunteers and clients.
Excellence is based on a constant search for the full satisfaction of our customers and partners in ensuring that the actions we take are always in perfect harmony with our management philosophy.
Accountability ensures that our actions are in line with our commitments, no matter what our roles or functions are, within the organization.
Transparency allows for frank and honest exchanges with all our members and partners and ensures the establishment of strong and lasting relationships.
Respect is exercised for our members, our partners, and the public. In addition, we are committed to ensuring that all our members are treated fairly, with dignity, and in accordance with the rules.
Teamwork and the sharing of power and responsibilities entrusted to us in exercising our functions are the basis of our daily exploits to achieve our mission of saving lives
The safety of our members is a priority, as much as the safety of the people that we rescue.
